The Not-a-Good-Workout-when-it’s-the-1st-Day-of-Class Treadmill Sesh

18 Aug

Gotta love the gym when it’s the first day of the semester. Every piece of cardio equipment is taken by girls, the weights section is swarmed by guys, and everyone’s really there to work up a good sweat. WRONG-O! Maybe I’m wrong, but I think 85% of the people at the gym should read my “How Hard Are You Working” post-just sayin’..

Anywho- today’s workout was a doozy! Although the weather was almost perfect in the A.M., it was too hot to run outside, so I opted for a treadmill workout instead. I love/hate the treadmill for 2 reasons:

  1.  love it because I can do any type of interval: the time, speed, and incline are all right in front of me at the touch of a button.
  2. hate it because it’s quite boring (except for the pink treadmills-they’re a lot more fun to run on :P )
Here’s how it went:
  • warm-up
  • 5 minutes @ 1.5% incline
  • 7 minutes @ 4% incline
  • walking lunges & lateral raises, anterior raises, overhead presses (3X)
  • 8 minutes @  2% incline
  • 4 minutes @ 8% incline
  • floating lat. pull downs (12/arm)
  • 6 minutes @ 2% incline
  • 4 minutes @ 6% incline
  • 3 minutes @ 10% incline
…and DUNZO! This was tough (I think I say that every post) and I finished this in roughly 45 minutes.

Lunchtime Quickie

9 Aug

When I only have so little time to workout during the day, a lunchtime workout it is! It’s amazing what a quick workout in the middle of your workday can do for you mood :)

Treadmill Hill Workout

  • Warm-up ~5-10 minutes (6.0 mph)
  • 1 minute @ 3% incline (6.2 mph)
  • 2 minutes @ 10% incline (6.2-6.0 mph)
  • 1 minute @ 1% incline to recover (6.2)
  • repeat 6-8X (depending on time)
This was super tough! Definitely more of an endurance workout than speed training. I rounded out my workout with a toning circuit:
  • walking lunges w/ shoulder presses
  • floating lat. pulldowns (don’t sit down!)
  • single-leg rope triceps pulldowns
  • walking lunges/ shoulder presses
  • dead lift-biceps curl (straight bar)
  • cable rotations

Choppy 1 Mile w/ Intervals

1 Aug

If running on the treadmill makes you fall asleep just thinking about it, then try this choppy workout:

  • run 4-quarter miles interspersed with strength training exercises.

This is another type of circuit interval training since your still alternating between high and low intensities, but at the low intensity stage, you’ll be weight training instead of slowing down to a jog and/or walk.

1. run .25 miles at a challenging yet manageable speed

  • kettlebell swings: 3 sets-20 reps

2. run .25 miles (.5=half way there!)

  • push-ups w/ rows
3. run .25 miles (.75=so close!)
  • walking lunges w/ shoulder press
4. run .25 (1 mile!)
  • abs
